Some of the most common questions that students have is, "Where do I go to find some salsa of my own?" This can be especially difficult for students that don't speak Spanish, because they don't even know what phrases to search for on the internet. In order to help, we are providing this musical resource page with links to music and some of the music we use in class.
Free Online Music
There are plenty of free online music sites around. Two of our recommendations are Pandora and Last.fm. One caveat, there is a chance that something completely unrelated to salsa can be played, due to the nature of these sites. If that happens, just hit next and it should be back on track.
- "Willie Colon & Ruben Blades Radio" - this is on Pandora
- "La 33 and Similar Artists" - a station on Last.Fm
- "Ibrahim Ferrer Radio" - another on on Pandora
The station featuring Willie Colon and Ruben Blades will play mostly salsa music with the classic New York sound. These is largely music from the late 60s through the late 70s that continues to inspire new generations of salsa lovers. The station featuring La 33 will play more modern salsa, much of which is coming from South America. On this station you will hear music with both the classic New York sound and songs with a salsa core mixed with other popular genres. On the Ibrahim Ferrer station you will hear music with strong Cuban roots, there will be a some salsa and cha cha, but there will also be son, guajira, boleros, maybe even a rumba or two.
Some Pre-Selected Playlists
These are some tracks from playlists that we've established for various classes. The Essentials playlist is no longer in use, but we are providing the playlist for additional information for students anyway.
